Personal Care

What is personal care & support?

Personal care is supporting an individual with daily personal activities including assistance with, or supervision of, personal tasks in daily life. For example: personal hygiene, including showering, bathing, oral hygiene, dressing and grooming; toileting, bladder and bowel management and menstrual care; eating and drinking; attending appointments; use of aids and appliances, hearing and communication devices; mobility and transferring, for example moving in and out of bed or on and off the toilet; or application of basic first aid due to injuries sustained as a result of a participant’s disability. Personal care and support may be required across a variety of settings, such as for a participant living alone in their own home, living with family or other people, when undertaking social, recreational, education or employment activities, or during holidays away from home.

Who requires personal care and support?

Personal care is about supporting someone who is unable to undertake these activities independently. Personal care can set an individual up for the day so they can get on with what is important to them. For a person who requires this support, we understand how imperative it is to feel safe, cared for, and respected. At Sunbird Home Care, we treat our participants as though we are caring for our own family.

Why is personal care important?

Personal care helps maintain a person’s dignity, health and wellbeing. Good hygiene and personal care reduce the risk of infection and illness as well as preventing pre-existing conditions from getting worse. It can also empower a person to maintain good mental wellbeing and a sense of pride in their self-care.

What is a personal care plan?

A personal care plan gathers important information about the individual’s personal care needs, required support, daily routine and preferences. At Sunbird Home Care our focus is on person-centred care, meaning the participant is involved with all decisions relating to their personal care support.
